Finished Bonnet

The bonnet is done! I have just a few things left to finish up before the deadline on December 7th. Pretty sure I will make it, although I may not have one piece of the ensemble. We'll see. I still have a little over two weeks.

Benjamin helped again when I sewed in the lining.

Finished lining.

The silk satin was beastly to sew. I hemmed strips to use as ties and decoration in an effort to save money, since wide silk ribbon can be pricey. Ugh. It wiggled and grew and shrunk under my fingers and was a general pain. Next time I will cough up the cash for ribbon or get taffeta.

I do like the finished look and the simplicity of the decoration. If I was to redo it for use after the fashion plate reveal, I would remove the zig zag edge and use a darker ribbon, such as olive green or brown or blue.

  1. And now I know which plate you've got :) The bonnet looks very much like the one in it, well done!

  3. Beautiful!!! You always amaze me :)
I took your advice and bought the work dress pattern, the dress is complete but I don't know what to do about the undergarments...there is no way I can nurse with my current corset on, so I'm wondering if I should get an underbust one...what do you do?

    1. Sorry its taken me so long to reply! My internet access has been spotty at best and I just re-saw your comment today. Anyway, yay! I'm so glad that pattern worked for you. As for nursing, my personal advice would be to do what is most comfortable for you. You could:

      A) Make a nursing corset. These had lace up or button up gussets that could be undone to allow easier access to the breast for the nursing baby. This requires making a whole new corset, though, so it may or may not be what you want.

      B) Go without a corset completely. This probably would not be the most comfortable for you, though.

      C) Wear a good fitting sports bra underneath your dress. This gives a passable look to the silhouette, with the only real downside being that the weight of the skirts will not be supported by a corset. You could certainly combine an underbust corset and a modern sports bra to both support the skirts and provide support and nursing access.

I've usually worn my regular corset when nursing but with my first son wore a soft, thick, supportive sports bra too, especially when he was an uber-tiny preemie and very sensitive to how things felt against his skin.

Hope this helps! Let me know what works out for you!

  4. The bonnet turned out amazing. It already looked stunning untrimmed but your end result is just absolutely gorgeous. =) Even though you say you're not really a milliner, the bonnet definitely looks like the work of a very skilled one.
